St Helena Island Day Cruise - Hamilton Departure (Lunch)
- Durée: 6 Heures (environ)
- Lieu: Hamilton, Queensland
- Code produit: SHILHAM
Overview:
Discover Brisbane's Hidden Gem: The "Hell Hole of the South Pacific" - Join us on the St. Helena Island Cruise to explore its intriguing past, just 6 km southeast of the Brisbane River mouth. Enjoy a buffet lunch onboard as you uncover the island's history as a penal settlement from 1867 to 1932, where prisoners grew their own food and made their own uniforms.
Notably, Captain Starlight (Walter Gordon) was an inmate here, and the island has been used by Aboriginal peoples for over 2,400 years. Marvel at the remaining buildings, over 100 years old, made from locally quarried beach rock.
Interestingly, only about three prisoners escaped in 65 years—likely due to the island's isolation or the sharks encouraged by scraps thrown into the waters. Unlike distant penal settlements like Port Arthur, this Historic National Park and bird haven is right at your doorstep!
